Chapter 12
Corbin got out of his vehicle when they pulled up to the field, met by a wall of Lennox men, Giovanni seemingly the ring leader. Heâd known them all by name, even before Davina told him about them, especially Remington. Remington had been a father figure for Davina and her siblings. Then there was Giovanni â heâd just seen him at Island Park this morning. The man barely acknowledged his presence. Her brother Kenton was next in line, standing with his arms crossed, and their cousin Drake looked just as pissed as the rest of them. The confidence he had earlier quickly waned. The Lennox men were well known around these parts and Davina had already warned him about her overbearing brothers.
âHere goes,â Corbin said swallowing the lump in his throat.
âTheyâre harmless,â Davina whispered when she saw that he was a little hesitant to move, but she didnât believe the words that had come out of her mouth. They were protectors and as far as they were concerned, Corbin was the enemy.
âYeahâ¦just getting my head on straight. I have to make a good impression.â Corbin took determined steps toward the fellas. âGood morning,â he said as he approached.
âGood morning. Againâ¦â Giovanni said hard-jawed.
Remington said, âGood to see you again, Corbin. I donât know how good it is to see you with my sister, though.â
âRemington, give me a break,â Davina said.
âItâs okay, Davina,â Corbin said. âIt shows they love you. I wouldnât expect anything less.â
âAnd what exactly are you expecting from my sister?â Kenton asked.
âIâm just getting to know your sister.â
âThought you already knew her,â Remington said. âDidnât you go to high school with her?â
âI did, butââ
âSo, you know her already then,â Giovanni said with narrowed eyes.
âYes, I knew her but we never talkedââ
âAnd now you decided to make your move,â Kenton said.
Davina shook her head. She didnât remember her brothers giving Jessalyn this hard of a time when she started dating Spencer. Maybe that was because Spencer was already cool with her brothers, being Remingtonâs best friend and all. Corbin wasnât in their circle.
Corbin said, âIâm not making a move necessarily. Iâm justââ
âAy, letâs just play,â Drake said interrupting Corbinâs explanation. âWe can take all of our frustrations out on the field.â
âYeah. Letâs do that,â Giovanni said, slamming his right fist into his left hand.
âWeâll see what heâs made of,â Kenton mumbled.
âYâall go play and leave him alone,â Jessalyn said.
Davina walked over to where Jessalyn and the rest of the Lennox women were standing â Joelle, Lavina, Lauren and her sister Jessalyn.
âSo, you and Corbin, huh?â Joelle asked.
âWeâre just hanging out, Jojo,â Davina replied. âNothing serious.â
âThatâs how it all starts,â Lauren said. âJust hanging out.â
âYâall hush,â Jessalyn said, coming to her sisterâs defense. âI think Corbin is really sweet. It was so funny how they were going back and forth the other day at the store.â
Davina shuddered. âOh, please donât bring that up. Weâre beyond that now.â
âOh, are you?â Jessalyn asked.
âYes, as a matter of fact we are. We went out last night.
