Chapter 12

Corbin got out of his vehicle when they pulled up to the field, met by a wall of Lennox men, Giovanni seemingly the ring leader. He’d known them all by name, even before Davina told him about them, especially Remington. Remington had been a father figure for Davina and her siblings. Then there was Giovanni – he’d just seen him at Island Park this morning. The man barely acknowledged his presence. Her brother Kenton was next in line, standing with his arms crossed, and their cousin Drake looked just as pissed as the rest of them. The confidence he had earlier quickly waned. The Lennox men were well known around these parts and Davina had already warned him about her overbearing brothers.

“Here goes,” Corbin said swallowing the lump in his throat.

“They’re harmless,” Davina whispered when she saw that he was a little hesitant to move, but she didn’t believe the words that had come out of her mouth. They were protectors and as far as they were concerned, Corbin was the enemy.

“Yeah…just getting my head on straight. I have to make a good impression.” Corbin took determined steps toward the fellas. “Good morning,” he said as he approached.

“Good morning. Again…” Giovanni said hard-jawed.

Remington said, “Good to see you again, Corbin. I don’t know how good it is to see you with my sister, though.”

“Remington, give me a break,” Davina said.

“It’s okay, Davina,” Corbin said. “It shows they love you. I wouldn’t expect anything less.”

“And what exactly are you expecting from my sister?” Kenton asked.

“I’m just getting to know your sister.”

“Thought you already knew her,” Remington said. “Didn’t you go to high school with her?”

“I did, but—”

“So, you know her already then,” Giovanni said with narrowed eyes.

“Yes, I knew her but we never talked—”

“And now you decided to make your move,” Kenton said.

Davina shook her head. She didn’t remember her brothers giving Jessalyn this hard of a time when she started dating Spencer. Maybe that was because Spencer was already cool with her brothers, being Remington’s best friend and all. Corbin wasn’t in their circle.

Corbin said, “I’m not making a move necessarily. I’m just—”

“Ay, let’s just play,” Drake said interrupting Corbin’s explanation. “We can take all of our frustrations out on the field.”

“Yeah. Let’s do that,” Giovanni said, slamming his right fist into his left hand.

“We’ll see what he’s made of,” Kenton mumbled.

“Y’all go play and leave him alone,” Jessalyn said.

Davina walked over to where Jessalyn and the rest of the Lennox women were standing – Joelle, Lavina, Lauren and her sister Jessalyn.

“So, you and Corbin, huh?” Joelle asked.

“We’re just hanging out, Jojo,” Davina replied. “Nothing serious.”

“That’s how it all starts,” Lauren said. “Just hanging out.”

“Y’all hush,” Jessalyn said, coming to her sister’s defense. “I think Corbin is really sweet. It was so funny how they were going back and forth the other day at the store.”

Davina shuddered. “Oh, please don’t bring that up. We’re beyond that now.”

“Oh, are you?” Jessalyn asked.

“Yes, as a matter of fact we are. We went out last night.
